It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we honor the memory of our dear friend and former board member, Elizabeth “Betty” Reid. Betty was a true Renaissance Woman, whose boundless creativity, immeasurable talents, and generous spirit touched the lives of all who knew her. She was a beloved teacher, a lifelong learner, and a cherished friend.
Betty’s knowledge and passion for nature were unparalleled. Whether she was identifying bird calls, teaching us about flowers and plants, or demonstrating the proper use of a chain saw, her enthusiasm was infectious. Affectionately known as “Chainsaw Betty,” she was an integral member of the Women of the Woods (WOW) group, always ready to clear trails and ensure they were safe for everyone to enjoy.
We will dearly miss Betty’s maple syrup, her delicious apple pies and carrot cakes, her beautifully decorated sugar cookies at Christmas, and the bountiful bouquets of flowers and vegetables from her gardens. Her creativity extended to her handmade quilts and greeting cards, and she was always organizing garden tours and supporting local nurseries.
Betty’s love for rescue dogs, including Scoopy, Maggie, Bree, and Julia, was evident in her patience and dedication to their training and care. Her compassionate nature shone through in her interactions with them, and they were her constant companions.
Even in the face of her diagnosis, Betty remained a beacon of bravery, grace, and wisdom. Her mantra, “it is what it is,” helped us all navigate the challenging times with a sense of acceptance and humor. Her indomitable spirit and sense of humor were with her until the end.
All of us at North County Land Trust are deeply honored that Betty chose us to receive memorial donations in her name. In tribute to her enduring love for nature and the trails she cherished, we are planning to install a memorial bench at Crocker Conservation, where Betty hiked almost daily. This bench will offer a place for hikers and walkers to rest, reflect, and remember Betty’s remarkable spirit.
Betty Reid’s legacy will live on in the natural beauty she so dearly loved and in the hearts of all who were fortunate enough to call her a friend. We are all better people for having had Betty in our lives. She will be forever missed but never forgotten.
