Now that nearly 200 acres of Monomonac Hill in Winchendon has been protected, North County Land Trust has been preparing the property
to open as its newest conservation area. A kiosk has been installed by the Trail Team and the parking area improved by a neighborhood volunteer; the area is nearly ready for visitors. Using an existing logging road and historic trail, a path has been improved by volunteers from the neighborhood and the greater community, kids and adults alike, to lead visitors out to the powerlines and up to a viewpoint of Mount Monadnock in the distance. A hand-built bench has been installed at this viewpoint and we hope many will relax there to enjoy the chirping birds and take in the lake and mountain scenery.
In recent weeks at Monomonac Hill we’ve enjoyed hearing and seeing many bird species such as Scarlet Tanager, Prairie Warbler, and Eastern Towhee while working away on the land. We hope that the more time spent out on this land will reveal a more treasured diversity of species, birds and otherwise, for us to enjoy.
The trail signs and painted blazes are set to go up on the last group volunteer workday, scheduled for June 11th at 4:30pm, completing the Kinglet’s Caper trail. A second trail, creating a loop, will be worked on throughout the summer to reclaim some of the logging roads as a path to travel from the powerlines and nearby to the north branch of the Miller’s River.
We hope that all will enjoy this gem of a property in the Lake Monomonac neighborhood, a property conserved to protect the health of the lake, the biodiversity and creatures living on this land, and to provide a place to spend time in nature through passive recreation for generations to come.
